[Titanaircraft] Re: Air cooled engine

Kess,

You are correct although the reason is a bit different. The VW heads
don't have the fin area that the Jabirus do and under high power loads
they require that a good amount of cooling air be forced down through
the heads around the valve area. Even at that the VW heads were not
designed to cool at the power levels that are being asked in some of
the bigger conversions.

The other factor is weight. The VW is about 160 lbs for 80 HP. The VWs
work when properly matched to an airfrmae but they typically do poorly
in pusher configurations. I've seen one work on a Titan and a Rans
S-12 but they weren't optimal and were soon removed.
