When I was doing my instrument training, the CFI had us do my IFR xcountry in his turbo Arrow (he didn't want to do the whole thing in the 150, we'd have been out there for years ;)). He had a 2-axis autopilot in the plane and I was instantly spoiled to it. Pretty much, shoot the departure, once established on the route, engage "Fred" as he used to call the AP and pretty much relax.... until time to shoot the approach at the arrival end.

A single axis is certainly going to be a help too, but you're still busy enroute maintaining your scan to hold altitude as well. It's just so much nicer and less fatigueing with a 2-axis.....

Again especially if you're using the plane primarily for travel, a 2-axis is the best money you can spend on equipment hands down.

For short hops, yeah it might be a little excessive and a 1-axis will still be pretty nice.

For us guys without medicals and flying LSA's.... who cares? I'm just glad I don't have to take bank loans out for all that stuff anymore hah!
