If the school proves to be successful, and it makes sense, I'll look at a Jabiru or 912, but until I can see that I can turn a decent profit I'm going to keep expenses to a minimum. The S model does seem to make more sense though.

JMO,
If you're going to be doing training, the operating expenses of the 582 are actually going to be higher over time than with a Jab or even a 912. To do it right, you'll be having to take the 582 down for inspection/cleanup every 300 hours or less (the usual inteval is 150 hours). You may or may not have to do an overhaul at that time (if the engine is run hard i.e lots of dual in a training environment, I'd recommend a new crank at 300 hours)

Fuel burn will be a little higher along with, as high as 6gph if you're really wringing it out flying dual and doing lots of pattern work.

So particularly if you plan to pile a lot of hours on the plane, you're going to be better off long-term with something else that won't require as much ongoing maintenance. I.e. the Jab or the 912.

The 582 is only more cost-effective when a good maint. schedule (150 hour teardown/cleanup intervals) doesn't interfere that much and you're not putting loads of hours on the plane all at once.
