Well, I finally did it! I busted a TFR last Friday on my way to a fly-in Pennsylvania!! Upon landing at the private strip, I was getting out of my plane and a guy came up and handed me a cell phone and said I had a phone call. It was the FAA and the guy asked me if I had checked the TFRs that morning because I had violated the expanded no fly zone around Camp David. I told him I had checked the NOTAMS (there were none)but not the TFRs, but I always operate under the assumption that that area is hot and stay out of it. He said that I had "nicked" it for about 1 1/2 miles. I must have had the left wing in and the right wing out. The expanded area is not on the GPS although it is on the sectional but there are no visual references on the ground that defines its limits. The dotted line is 1/2 mile wide. Why they can't add that to GPS maps is beyond me. Anyway, the long and short of it was that I was let off with a warning because my record is clean as a whistle. He told me to make sure my return trip was clear of the area and after discussing how much he liked the Tornado, he wished me a great weekend. I must say that this guy was very professional and pleasant to deal with but they take VERY seriously any violations of this type. I'm still half expecting the Secret Service to pull up to my house in their tinted window Suburbans.
