The 912/914 is the one with all the confusing designations, mostly because there's a bunch of different versions of it:

UL - 80hp "non-certificated"
ULS - 100hp "non-certificated"
S - 100hp "certificated", i.e. meant for use in standard category aircraft
A and F - 80hp "certificated" (can't remember the difference between the A and F models off the top of my head tho).
914 - the turbocharged version and I know there's a certificated version of this one too.

... and it gets worse from there, since there're versions that can use constant speed props, or can be converted to use constant speed props, etc.

As for the 503 I learnt it the way JD says: the normal version with dual carbs and the fan is 50hp, the free air version without the cooling fan is 52 hp (DCDI means dual CDI, 1v means single carb, 2v means dual carb).

It's a bit of a mess....

Just curious. I am starting to get a bit confused with all the letter ending for the Rotax engines like for the 912 you have the ULS, UL, The S I think. How does one really keep track? The Jab is simple you have the 2200 or the 3300 and you know the difference.
