[Titanaircraft] Re: Engine Selection

Derek,

There have been alot of engines tried, both successfully and unsuccessfully. They include:

VW - Rather heavy, has some CG issues and requires the flaps to be shortened to mount

HKS 700E - Nice engine and easy to install, but not in the same power range as the Jabiru 2200/3300 and Rotax 912

Subaru - Too heavy for this application

Air Hog - There was talk, but I'm not sure anyone has installed one

Hirth F30 - Has not proven to be a real reliable engine

Derek,

as Kimberly will tell you, I doubt there is anyone who has thought alot more about, and schemed of ways to get, a less expensive engine for a Tornado than me, but we finally elected to go the Jabiru route. And believe me, you will find that when you have a new plane it is wonderful to know that you are taking off with something that has flown on hundreds of other Tornados and proven extremely reliable. The Jabirus and 912 family of Rotax will continue to dominate for quite a while, in my opinion.

If money is a problem, look for a good used engine. For example, you might find someone who is selling a good used 2200 because they are upgrading to a 3300. Before you buy, be sure to consult all of your family of Tornado friends here on the list so you don't end up buying one of the older versions of the 2200 or 912 that will cost you a bundle to upgrade. Remember, we are here to watch your back!
