I wonder about a tail skid with a wheel in it, which sticks out just
enough so that on pavement, the tail wheel will roll, while on grass,
there's a more tapered skid with more area to take the impact without
being torn off.

For the record, I've lost my tailwheel three times, twice on grass.
On grass, it isn't hard to put it into the dirt, at which point the
little hole just created wants to keep the wheel.

The first time, on pavement, the tailwheel fell off as I was rolling
it over the taxiway by hand. Every 10 feet there was a depression
that caused a noticeable "bump" as it rolled over it. After about 5
of these, the tailwheel came off.

I suspect the rivets had already been damaged by a couple of thunks
during previous landings.

A friendly RV builder on the field helped me rivet back on, and off I went.
