My airport is at 6300' MSL and the density altitudes I fly in are commonly higher than that.
I honestly havn't done any real measurements of takeoff distance but 1000' here would be pretty scary. The 1000 footers on our runway are under me most of the time while I'm still accelerating in ground effect for sure. If there's a stiff wind that helps, but in calm conditions I wouldn't want to even try it unless it was clear of obstacles at the other end for a looong ways....
At near sea level like at JD's old place in NE, it just leapt off the ground but up here the performance is far less (i.e. max rate of climb down from around 1800fpm solo to about 800fpm solo).
He'd probably still be ok on landing as long as he used a short-field technique with full flaps, but takeoff I don't think would be too safe.
Keep in mind I have the 26' wing as well which helps those performance figures a bunch.
I'll try to make a more accurate note of my t/o performance next time I'm up tho....
