Re: [Titanaircraft] Converting Titan 1 to a taildragger

Kess,

I don't think that's a good idea. I'm not sure the aft fuselage weldments and attaching frames were designed for the weight and a pounding load that occurs while taxiing as a taildragger. Another issue. The tail is already close to the ground on the Tornado and takes a beating from rocks. Why would you want to put it on the ground? Did your friend realize that you'd need to engineer and install a new gear leg truss to move the gear forward to move the CG in addition to the design and installation of a tailwheel? It's just not worth the time and effort, plus I don't think Guy would give his stamp of approval, as I don't think anyone else here would have warm and fuzzy feelings about it. You're truly an engineer and testpilot at that point.

My hangar mate Pat wants to consider converting his Titan 1 to a tail dragger. He says that since his plane wants to sit on the tail when empty, why not all the time. He has scoped out the gearleg sockets, and thinks that he can recreate them right under the front seat. Has anyone does this before?? My solution is like Kimberly's, just put bags of sand in the seat when your not flying.
