[Titanaircraft] Transiting Controlled airspace

Saturday was a great day to fly in Southern California. Cloudless skies and light winds greeted the coastline northwest of the Los Angeles area and I had planned a flight from my home base in Santa Ynez to Camarillo, about 60 miles east to visit my dad on his 91st birthday.

Flying through the San Marcos Pass at 3,500 feet was a breeze while talking the nice folks at Santa Barbara approach. I flew the most direct route to Camarillo maintaining 3,500 until the handoff to Mugu approach. Enjoying smooth air and a slight tailwind my groundspeed for the trip was a nice 110 mph in the SS.

After a nice breakfast with my son, mom & dad, I got a quick release from Camarillo Tower and skirted the northern part of the Oxnard Airport Class D and headed for the beaches lining the shoreline from Ventura to Santa Barbara.

Dropping down to *** feet just offshore I cruised the beaches renown for surfers and the southern California lifestyle: Rincon, Mussel Shoals, Carpinteria, and Summerland. Climbing up to 1,500 feet so Santa Barbara approach could see me I got a transponder code and requested a transit of their area up the coastline along the beaches. Even though they have regular operations at SBA the great controllers there approved my transit with only a report at Santa Barbara harbor from there I just monitored the tower frequency and was free to cruise all the way up the Santa Barbara coastline, within the class C airspace and right past the airport...all at 200 or so feet above the water...wow! You can see the dolphin jumping around!

The point of the story is...Don't hesitate to have a nice talk with your local controller...you'll be surprised with what they will allow you to do if "workload and traffic permit".

I've posted a nice photo of Santa Barbara in my "Captain Bob" photo album.
