Re: [Titanaircraft] Re: 2 stroke engines

Alberto,

Do you have a web site for these very interesting engines. Good aviation and fast planes is all about hp per pound. 10 lb per pound is a good place to start, and less is better. My plane, fuel and me is 696lb, so 70hp is a target figure for spritely performance. Is that the one that is also used on the Cri-Cri, and though they are singles is that the company?

Kess

I know people who are flying with Simonini engines.
No complain at all except you will need time to fine tune the carbs. By the way, that is common for all 2-stroke engines.
It has a huge amount of power but they need a very big muffler set.
Mr. Simonini normally can custom made a muffler set for your installation, at least here in Italy.
It is well used now on amphibians (zenair type with floats ) as well as trikes. One trike manufacturer in ITaly installs such engines as a standard.
The top of the line is a 2 cylinder one 110 hp (!) . People told me it is a "monster" .
Fuel consumption, on a aerodinamically dirty aircraft such a big trike is around 14 liter per hour (3.6 gph).
Hope this helps

Alberto

I flew an 80HP F30 in a 2-place Hawk that Randy Sill had. It was very smooth, since it would take eight 4-stroke cylinders to equal the crankshaft pulses. The flaps on the Tornado also would need to be clipped to clear the cylinders for the F30. That engine comes in a few versions, including 80/100/105/110HP. Hirth also makes a powerful 3-cylinder engine, but then again, the dreaded crankshaft issues. Like most people here that have flown two strokes, other than the one flight with the Hirth, I've flown more than half a dozen 2-strokes, but all were Rotax. We've never had a failure with a 2-stroke, but the reliability problems claimed by other people, and having to carry around lots of 2-stroke oil whenever going someplace steered us away from them.

> Hello group. for the time being im just looking around online trying to find the right combo for when i try to build. Ive figured ill build a titan, probly a single place for my first plane. As you know a huge range of hp options applies in terms of engine selection and im not firm on whether to go with a 4 or two stroke. obviously a 2 stroke motor has a bunch of problems with reliability. but for cost sake, 2 is the way im leaning. now ive found plenty of 2 strokes out there that have claims of reliability or power to weight stats that seem great, ie.: rotax, hirth, siminoni. these three are the ones im looking at. Im finding their claims, except for rotax, which i think is at the lower end of my needs for power ( hoping for about 100, or more hp), well, ill say, a little unbelievable. and ive read mixed forum reports which say im correct in this assumption. However, since you guys fly titans and im gonna build one, can someone please, if youve had experience with some of these power options be frank about your, or ohters you know, experiences with them? Your candidness can go a long way to making my decision. ( thinking if i should save and just buy a ssecond hand Jabiru 3300).
