Re: [Titanaircraft] Re: New Titan owner with a few problems/questions

Kim,

Thanks so much for your expertise on the brake conversion. I have to save my money for a bit, but part of the future.

My main immediate task is to get an outside fill for the gas tank. My plane, you have to open the door and fill over the seat, ugh.....! My hangar mates Titan has an outside fill right on the top of the rear fuselage. Mine is different at the back being a Gull 2000, but I've scoped out a place through the wing that will allow a wing top flush mount filler.

What do you know about the Simonini engines? The spec's seem awesome, but they probably cost loads of money.

Kess

Kess,

Since your reply was directly above my post, I figured you were responding to me instead of Randy for the master cylinder conversion. Here's what I did on the RANS S-14. Up front, the cable brakes are completely stock. If you didn't looked far enough back in the cabin, or notice hydralic lines and brake calipers peeking out from the wheelpants, you wouldn't know they were hydraulic disc, until you stepped on the brakes and were wondering how anyone got an S-14 to stop so quick. I wish I'd drawn up the the thing in CAD before it left the shop. When Randy Schlitter of RANS Aircraft saw it, he wanted it as a retrofit kit since it would fit all aircraft with cable-operated brakes, but since I didn't get the drawings done, it kind'a fell by the wayside.

You'll notice that I re-drilled the master cylinder levers after I re-calculated the mechanical advantage. You want 3.5:1 or better mechanical advantage combined between the pedals and the master cylinders. If you zoom in on a couple of photos of the airplane itself, you'll see the gold Matco calipers hanging just below the wheel pant.

Notice that the levers are actually made from angled aluminum that I have machined most of one angle off. They are significantly stronger and resist sideways flexing and bending, even with that much material removed. I hope you decide to build it. I did so with hardware store materials, other than the stainless 3/16" rivets. You could have the angles heli-arced if you have such a resource available.

cheers,

--Kimberly

Randy:
I am interested in the Matco Master Cylinders. Contact me via email please! vieja@sbcglobal.net or call 559-260-4100.

I haven't seen the spindles on the Thundergull, but if they can accomodate a 5/8" or 3/4" diameter axle shaft, they just need the Matco axle mounting flange welded on. Also, even if you don't have a specific place to mount master cylinders, they can me mounted remotely, and don't have to be hard-mounted. If you decide to do that, e-mail me, and I'll send you all the pics I have of a modular conversion I did for a RANS S-14 that had absolutely no mounting place for the master cylinders. I built a single modular unit that housed both master cylinders in a clean and compact package that was simply held to an aft cabin cabane with two insulated adel clamps.
