I wouldn't say this is a good metric to follow, actually. Some of the reasons for going to a 4-stroke aren't good ones. A lot of folks go to a 4-stroke simply because they think they need to. They get talked out of the 2-stroke, believing some story that it's going to seize and kill them, even tho they hadn't really had trouble with the 2-stroke in the meantime and it's already a suitable engine for the plane.

Other times, the 2-stroke is abandoned because it's simply too small. This is the reason I have ended up flying a 912 - my favorite engine of all time, the rotax 503, simply isn't big enough to power the size of plane that I currently need, so I've had to go to one fitted with the 912.

In other cases, fuel consumption is a reason (2-strokes are thirstier than equivalent 4-strokes).

So it's not always just reliability or even suitability.

As for the titan, tho, by and large the Jab and 912 series are the main engines used on it. This is generally because most of the models are too big to use the popular 2-strokes on them and the 4-strokes end up being the best options overall.

I personally wouldn't fly any other 2-stroke but the Rotax 503, 582 or 618. My preference among these 3 is far and away the 503 (my favorite motor ever which I flew for about a decade). But at 50hp, it's borderline even for the single place titan unless you build it fairly light. The 582 isn't as reliable (crankshaft is weak spot) and it's no longer really financially practical anymore ($6000 new just for the engine). The 618 is no longer in production.

So really, for the titan, by the time it's all said and done, the most practical options in the end are the 4-strokes, the Jabiru and the Rotax 912 series.

My experience with the titan is all with the 912ULS that came on the plane when I bought it. So far it's been a good engine and hopefully it'll stay together out to its TBO (1500 hours) at least. If it survives that long, it will have been a good deal.
