Re: [Titanaircraft] 2 stroke engines

I had a Titan single place with a Rotax dual carb 503 that took me all over the US. I could always count on at least 100 mph, although most people won't believe it. I also flew other Rotax powered single seat planes on long cross country flights. The prototype had a Rotax single carb 447. It was good for about 80- 85 mph cruise. The others were powered by Rotax 503s. They would go at least 100 mph all day long.

I delivered Roger Bacon's first two place Titan to its new owner in Texas. It was powered by a Rotax 503. I had my 15 gallon fuel tank strapped into the back seat. It would do about 95 mph. I took it from Germack Airport (Geneva, OH) to San Antonio, TX. That trip took a day and a half.

I have flown many Titans powered by 4 strokes. They are fast and climb very well, although the Rotax 503 does the job just fine. By the way, I haven't had a 503 fail since the late 80s when they had a mechanical points ignition system.

If you go with the Rotax 503, change the plugs a little more often if you use 100 LL. I ran good 100:1 oil and mixed it 100:1 myself- no oil injection. Don't count on flying much over 12,500 feet. The mixture gets a little fat up there and the 503 runs out of power.

Keep the build light. It'll work.

If you want a bunch of heavy stuff, get a 4 stroke.

The 3300 would be an extreme single seater... could be fun.

Subject: [Titanaircraft] 2 stroke engines

Hello group. for the time being im just looking around online trying to find the right combo for when i try to build. Ive figured ill build a titan, probly a single place for my first plane. As you know a huge range of hp options applies in terms of engine selection and im not firm on whether to go with a 4 or two stroke. obviously a 2 stroke motor has a bunch of problems with reliability. but for cost sake, 2 is the way im leaning. now ive found plenty of 2 strokes out there that have claims of reliability or power to weight stats that seem great, ie.: rotax, hirth, siminoni. these three are the ones im looking at. Im finding their claims, except for rotax, which i think is at the lower end of my needs for power ( hoping for about 100, or more hp), well, ill say, a little unbelievable. and ive read mixed forum reports which say im correct in this assumption. However, since you guys fly titans and im gonna build one, can someone please, if
youve had experience with some of these power options be frank about your, or ohters you know, experiences with them? Your candidness can go a long way to making my decision. ( thinking if i should save and just buy a ssecond hand Jabiru 3300).

Thanks
David Shirar
