Re: [Titanaircraft] Re: HKS exhaust problems

If your carbs are facing forward the muffler will go in front of them.  Not a problem on my RANS.  Then I placed the oil cooler in front of the muffler at an angle, fairing everything.

That is on a plane that is always hangered. I am afraid that the HKS
system will not work on my application due the the placement of the
carbs. The muffler will have to go on top of the engine or under the
gearbox.

HKS would not be able to help you with your problem since it is a one-off design.  From the pictures, it looks like a basket case created by sitting out in the weather for a long time. Any attempted repairs would give you a temporary fix, at best. HKS offers at least 4 different configurations of exhaust sytems, one of which I'm sure you could apply to your setup.  The HKS type II system is what I put on my S-14 which places the muffler in front of the engine and I think you can buy it, or any of them, for around $400.  Jerry Olnick at Greensky Adventures would be a good source for assistance.

Check the seal around where the oil fill tube mounts to the
block. I had an issue there early on and it was an easy fix.

[Titanaircraft] HKS exhaust problems

Hi all,

I don't want to offend anyone, but I need help. Due to the small size of
the Earthstar group I figured there had to be some insight on this
group. My Thunder Gull HKS exhaust has been a problem since I got it.
About 100 hrs on the exhaust and the cracking wont stop around the x
pipe portion. Now the system has rusted through and I can get no help
from the Manufacture. It looks like I will have to build my own system
from scratch. The OD of the tubing is 1 3/4. I need to find a weldable
ball and socket set like on the 914 and start a new system. I do not
know where to locate the ball and socket. I would like to go with
stainless. Any help with a new system would be great. I posted pics.

Hi Dale,
I have been lurking on the titan group for a few years. I don't normally post anything because I don't own a titan I just really like them. If you wanted to see some titans up close there are usually 4 to 6 of them that show up at Jewel Ness's fly in Wanamingo Minnesota which is today ( sunday aug 30th). I do not know if you could talk one of them into a ride or not but it is a great fly in with a lot of old cars and when the weather is good probably over 75 airplanes show up. Another fly in next sunday in Mondovi Wisconsin also usually has several titans show up. Good luck finding a nice used titan.

Re: [Titanaircraft] Re: Buying a used Titan Tornado ll airplane

Dale,

Yes, in the standard 2-seater. The 2S and 2SS are new enough, there are no notable changes there. However, in the standard 2-seater, the most appreciable changes came after mid-'97, where the side supports for the front seat were changed from straight to curved and attached higher to the cabin uprights. Without the curved braces, it is it very difficult for a normal-sized person to fit back there without grinding their shins. I'm 5'9", and my shins get pressed fairly hard against them, and I usually end up with bruises after flying in the rear of that generation for more than an hour. There were also variations in the standard 2, which also included the Tornado 2 - 912S as well as the 150 VNE wing. There were a few other changes, like the battery on later models is tilted forward, changes to the number and length of tailboom doublers. Just a glance forward into the nosecone to see the tilted battery, and you can tell if an older one has had the curved front seat side supports added -- just as we did on one we rebuilt.

It really does have those advantages Tim listed, primarily parts prices if you do have buy parts. The 912 parts prices are absolutely scary (can you say 1000 bucks for a CDI box, otherwise about $30 of parts from digikey if you were able to build one yourself? How about $200 a pop for valves? at least 12 large for an overhaul?).

Re: [Titanaircraft] strobe lights installation

Denys,

It depends if the wing is finished or not. If not, it lays in the hat spar with an entry hole near the center of the wing. If so, you'll want small and very light PVC tubing. Even so, you'll have to get it around wing linkages, which won't be easy, then you have to secure it to a few places throughout the wing so it does't rattle against anything -- especially the ribs. If it does rattle, you'll be in for a short sometime in the future when the ribs saw through it.

Hi all,
I recently purchased a strobe lights kit to fit on the wing tips of my 23 1/2 wing.
If anyone has done the job, where and how did you routed the wires through the wing?

Re: [Titanaircraft] Aux tanks

Chinook tanks are available from Titan. They usually have the installation parts in stock. Two tanks add about ten gallons capacity. The mounts and plumbing will be internal. On a completed wing, installing the hard points will require removing some skin from the lower surface of each side of the wing, installing some additional shear webs, installing the tank mounts, installing fuel lines and installing some wing skin. If one has good shop skills, it's a moderately difficult job.
If the wing isn't finished, it's an easy process to install the parts prior it installing the wing skins.
We built a few wings with four sets of hard points so four Chinook tanks could be mounted (20 gallons). Titan usually doesn't usually do that, but the parts are the same so just order twice the number of parts from Titan. Leave one bay open between the hard points.
I used to run the tank in the back seat for ferrying Titans around, but the tank does use up the passenger space.

OK Claudia, here are my thoughts on aux fuel. I don't fly a Titan but for this topic the aircraft type is not very relevant.

Sounds like Guy, Vivian and Andre have one good idea for a rear seat aux tank which is fine if you don't mind losing the seat. If you still need the seat may be this approach with external tanks from a chinook would work.

Here the tanks are easily removed leaving the plumbing in place (quick disconnect at the tank).

The issues (no matter what tank you go for) are venting, back flow from mains, valves, electrical control and accessibility. With a back seat tank and the above chinook tanks, if you don't have check valves and you aren't careful with the on/off valve, the mains can drain back into the aux. If you took the vent high enough that would solve the problem but at least getting it outside as Andre mentioned would minimize the problem.

Basically you put a T in the fuel line between the main tanks and the engine and after the main fuel shut off valve. This new line which will connect to the aux tank needs a shut off valve which you can reach in flight. In the S7 pictured above, the new line goes to a left/right valve to select either aux tank or off. It didn't need another fuel pump because the engine driven pump is enough. If you use a back seat tank, the new line would just go to the quick disconnect at that tank.

The main valve is on the left. The T feeds the 3 way valve on the right (left off right).

The chinook tanks have a check valve but the word is they regularly fail so I chose to remove them. Yes, I have forgotten to shut off the valve to them and did dump fuel on the tarmac when filling the mains.

Another side benefit of the T, valve and quick disconnect is that it can be used to re-fuel the mains. I have a 60L tank with a fuel pump mounted and simply plug this in while I'm pre-flighting. It is not fast but it saves holding a can above the wings.

Have you got your AOA installed yet??

RE: [Titanaircraft] Seeling a used Titan S airplane

Jim,

Although an LSA Tornado would sell better, you can't convert an EXP-AB
aircraft to LSA. As long as your Tornado has met all the LSA requirements
since its original registration, a Sport Pilot can own and fly it with no
problem at all. As long as it was registered at or under 1320# gross with
fixed pitch prop, you're good to go.

Hi all,

The time has come to sell my Titan IIS. It's registered now as EXP-AB.
Can anyone point me to some good resources on how to convert it to
E-LSA? I think it will sell better as an LSA.

Don't forget parts prices, which are just out of sight on the 912 series but far cheaper for the jab... ;)

That said, I'll make a plug for the 912's advantages:

- The gear drive allows more prop options. You can run diameters as high as 70" like I do on my II SS which allows very hefty climb rates. It's a myth that the gearbox needs regular overhaul. It does require some checks of the clutch and dog gear tension, etc., but it's supposed to last the life of the engine and generally does if you do the maintenance.

- the water cooling has the advantage of simpler installation. Long as you got a place to put the radiator I.e. on top of the wing, the engine itself doesn't require any air ducting or other extra cooling (except in cowled installations which doesn't apply to the titan).

- the 912 is a dry sump with a seperate oil tank. This makes the engine itself very low profile so it can be installed sitting right on top of the mount. This lowers the thrustline.

But don't let that stop you with the jab, as I wouldn't hesitate to go with a 2200 equipped plane.

I love my 912 but I would also fly under a 2200 with not a thought ;)

Re: [Titanaircraft] Buying a used Titan Tornado ll airplane

Hello, Dale.  You won't go wrong with either the 912 or the Jab 2200.  They are both fine engines.  Since I fly with the Jab, here are a few advantages that I see with this engine, IMHO.

It's lighter than the 912.
It has fewer moving parts, i.e. no reduction drive (which needs periodic overhaul).
Oil cooler not necessary where you are.
No radiator to mess with.
Single carburator so you don't have to balance them.
Oil changes are a snap.
Cabin/carb heat easily set up with a heat muff and scat tubes.
A lot less plumbing than the 912. (another weight advantage)
If an engine can be called "pretty" the Jabiru is it!

[Titanaircraft] Buying a used Titan Tornado ll airplane

I,m new to this group.
I,m looking to buy a used Titan Tornado ll.
I will want a four stroke engine in the plane.
What are the advantages of the Rotax 912 vs the Jabiru 2200?
Is their any obvious problems that accrue with this airplane?
also is there anyone around Minneapolis, MN area That would be willing to give me a ride to see what the plane is like?
Thanks
Dale

RE: [Titanaircraft] Re: auxiliary gas tank

I made an aux tank out of a commercial 5 gallon lawn mower fuel tank.  I bungeed it to the top of the main tank behind the seat of my S-14.  Fuel was transferred to the main tank by gravity through a Tee in the main vent line.  I ran the fuel line forward to where I could turn it off and on with a ball valve on the right side of the cockpit. The fuel cap was already vented and I never had a fuel odor problem unless the aux tank had gas in it and sat for awhile on a hot day. Otherwise, there was plenty of ventilation in flight. It worked very well but baggage space suffered some.

I never tried the aux tank idea myself, but have heard stories of others
that had. Most are just as described with a fuel pump to transfer to the
main. When I built my first, I decided 15 gallons wasn't enough for the
kind of flying I wanted to do, so fabricated wing tanks giving me near 25
gallons. I've since installed drop tanks on 2 Tornados, which works fairly
well...until it's time to fill them back up, then they are a challenge.

Thanks for the response Vivian. Sounds like he kept the rear seat in place
instead of removing it. That would be simpler, but I kind of like the idea
of removing seat to see if I can then use the top of the tank to still store
some stuff back there.

Come on gang, only one response to my questions for some photos or ideas on
auxiliary gas tank?! Please give me some love with a photo or two and some
thoughts on the process.

[Titanaircraft] Re: auxiliary gas tank

My idea is to construct a tank out of Aeropoxy and urethane foam to
fit the seat area. I planned to make it about 8" high, and it would
make a shelf on which I could put baggage.

I thought I would plumb it into the existing gas line feed and vent
system, with 1/4" inlets and outlets.

Because the tank would be above the bottom of the main gas tank and
below the top of the main tank as well, it could be filled by filling
the main tank and waiting for the fuel to flow into the aux tank.

Then you fill the main tank to the top and off you go.

Using fuel in the tank is automatic, because it flows into the main
tank as fuel is taken out of the main tank.

The down side is that I did a test with water, and I figured that the
aux tank would take about 20 minutes to fill, after the main tank was
topped off.

Aircraft Spruce sells gas fittings that close when they're
disconnected. Very cool.

I haven't built this contraption, so I can't report how well it works
in practice.

[Titanaircraft] Aux tanks

[Titanaircraft] Re: auxiliary gas tank

Years ago I had a 15 gallon tank that I would strap into the back seat of the Tornado using the seat belts. I had a Facet pump that pumped fuel into the original main tank from the 15 gallon tank as needed. The 15 gallon tank came from US Plastics, but a search of their website now shows no 15 gallon tanks.

I did find some boat tanks that would probably work. Check out this link:

Re: [Titanaircraft] strobe lights installation

Hello Denys,

A way I have seen it done, was to obtain an appropriate length of 1/2 or 3/4 ID PVC pipe, install that through the rib lightening holes and secure it with ties. Check that the PIPE DOES NOT INTERFERE with any controls

Then route the wires through the PVC Pipe and secure as needed at the exit points. The weight of the PVC Pipes is very small, and the security it offers the wire is very, very good.

I am sure that this is one idea, and that there will be many more.

Re: [Titanaircraft] 26' vs 23.5' wings

You can get any of the three different wing lengths for any Tornado. Unless you fly at high altitude, loaded for bear on hot days on a regular basis, or are under-powered, the 23-1/2' wing gives a little smoother ride than the 26' does in bumpy air, but the 26' typically adds about 100-150 FPM climb over the 23-1/2' on the heavier planes. Don't even go near the 20-footer unless it is an overpowered single-seater.

I am interested in the Tornado 2. I was wondering if the 26' wings were available only on the Tornado 2s or if they were also available as an option on the Tornado 2.

If both wing options are available on the Tornado 2, would anybody comment on the difference in performance between the 3.5' and the 26' wing on the Tornado 2.

Re: [Titanaircraft] Re: 26' vs 23.5' wings

That sounds pretty close. With the 23-1/2' wing 618 we had, max cruise was 92MPH indicated at 7000' MSL.
