You seemed to have missed the point. The issue isn't the buying power of a dollar today compared to 1989, it's the distribution of dollars among the participants in our economy today vs the distribution in 1989.

The reasons are complicated but the overall affect is pretty clear. Lots of studies and ink has been spilled on this in the last 20 years or so.
